Course Description

Medical Laboratory Science is a two year HST course offered here at The School of Health Professions. This is a hands on course that covers every aspect and department of a hospital clinical laboratory. Students are required to collect blood by capillary and vena puncture on each other. Other body fluid samples are also tested. All test and collections are done under the supervision of a Certified Medical Technologist and are conducted in a safe sterile environment. Parents are required to give permission for the collection procedures. Students can obtain their Phlebotomy certification at the end of their senior year in this program.

 

Eligibility

The course is open to juniors and seniors who have successfully completed all of the following prerequisites:

  • Anatomy and Physiology

  • Biology

  • Chemistry

  • Health Science Clinical

  • Health Science Diagnostic

  • Principles of Health Science

Students who wish to enroll in Medical Laboratory 2 must successfully pass Medical Laboratory 1 to enroll.

 

Internship

After a semester of learning in the classroom, the Medical Laboratory student will have an opportunity to participate in a non-paid internship at various hospitals, clinics and health care facilities within the Dallas Metroplex.

During this internship, students will shadow professionals and learn more about the health careers in the work based environment.
