The Therapy Careers Cluster just may be what you’ve always been looking for.

 

Course Description

The Therapy Careers Cluster offers an introduction to careers in the allied health fields of Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Massage Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, Recreational Therapy and Sports Medicine. In addition, this course will prepare students with the understanding of skills and knowledge required for success in a post-secondary education.

This course is an integration of Kinesiology (the study of the body in motion), Medical Terminology and Anatomy and Physiology.
 

Junior and senior students in this one-year course gain an understanding of the skills and knowledge needed for immediate employment in a therapy department or for post-secondary study. They participate in a non-paid internship or shadowship in a therapy area as available.

 

Eligibility

The course is open to both juniors and seniors who have successfully completed all of the following prerequisites:

  • Anatomy and Physiology

  • Biology

  • Chemistry

  • Health Science Clinical

  • Health Science Diagnostic

  • Principles of Health Science

Internship

After a semester of learning in the classroom, the Therapy student will have an opportunity to participate in a non-paid internship at various hospitals, clinics and health care facilities within the Dallas Metroplex.

During this internship, students will shadow professionals and learn more about the therapy careers in the work based environment.

 

Classroom Activities

  • Demonstrate correct preparation and positioning for specific therapy procedures.

  • Range of motion and stretching

  • Therapeutic modalities

  • Basic concepts of exercise and identify and describe the basic uses for selected pieces of exercise equipment and assistive devices.

  • Rehabilitative Procedures

  • Patient Charting

  • Basic Restorative Skills

  • Principles for working with the patient with cognitive/perceptive limitations

  • Gait Training

  • Hot/Cold Applications

  • Athletic Training procedures

  • Recreational Therapy

  • Massage Therapy

  • Sign Language

  • Concepts of working with individuals with hearing and speech difficulties.

  • Stretching and Strengthening exercises

 

After successful completion of the Therapy Careers Cluster, students may choose to enroll in the Sports Medicine Cluster their senior year.
