Veterinary Careers 11th  & 12th

Course Description

This two-year program provides students with the instruction in animal anatomy, physiology and pathology. They also learn about animal care and nutrition and how to perform diagnostic lab tests. Students attend shadowship & internship at various veterinary facilities as available.

 

During the first year of the program, students focus on the skills needed to assist the veterinarian in diagnosing diseases. The second year students will focus on hands on skills with small companion animals and incorporate their knowledge from the first year program to assist a veterinarian with the care of animals.

 

Eligibility

The course is open to both juniors and seniors who have successfully completed all of the following prerequisites:

  • Anatomy and Physiology

  • Biology

  • Chemistry

  • Health Science Clinical

  • Health Science Diagnostic

  • Principles of Health Science

Veterinary Assisting 1 is required to enroll in Veterinary Assisting 2

 

Internship

First year students will attend observations during the Spring semester at a local veterinary referral center and spend a day in each of the following veterinary specialty clinics of Dermatology, Radiology, Physical Therapy & Surgery, Ophthalmology, Internal Medicine, and Clinical Laboratory.

Second year students will attend internship in the Spring semester at a local veterinary office, animal shelter or pet grooming facility, where they will be able to participate in observation and hands-on skills learned in both the Vet Assisting 1 and 2 courses.

  • Collecting Stool Samples

  • Venipuncture

  • Urinalysis

  • Muzzling

  • Retraining an animal

  • CPR and First Aid for small companion animals

  • Emergency care for animals
